The hedgehog concept is from the book Good to Great by Jim Collins. It's the simple idea that is at the intersection of three circles: best at, economic engine, and passion.

Just had a great conversation with a young man who was reading it on the plane. He was actually just about to start the hedgehog concept chapter. The gentleman on the other side of him had also read that book. He was into real estate. He didn't remember what the hedgehog concept was. I told the young man to read the chapter and then let me know what he thought. The chapter was fairly mind blowing for him. It was actually really good for him to be able to talk about it right after reading it with someone who also knows about it. I did it in grad school preparing to be a school principal. I didn't even know I was using the hedgehog concept when I was a band director before I became a principal. Now I'm back teaching orchestra and employing get into the orchestra program I am building at my school. Great to run across this again. Thanks.

I prefer Robert Greene's Mastery. Collins suggests that we can't master or be a genius at something we aren't good at.
