Restoring Africa's vital landscapes & forests with Restore Local | The Audacious Project 2023

Growing up in Kenya, Wanjira developed an intimate understanding of nature’s restorative power. For Wanjira, being an innovator has always been in her blood, with her mother becoming the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. This inspired her to think big.

“We, as the African continent, have contributed to only 4% of global emissions — but are already suffering from significant impacts of climate change.”

Together, AFR100 and WRI will launch Restore Local — and scale restoration work across Africa, ultimately restoring 100M+ hectares of degraded land. We can’t wait to hear from Wanjira and the team!

The Audacious Project 2023
Five years in, we are excited to announce the largest funding pool of $1 billion catalyzed for innovations in climate, breakthrough science, child welfare and women’s health. The ten grantees will present their big ideas onstage at TED2023, and join an existing portfolio of 39 Audacious projects, for which more than four billion philanthropic dollars has been catalyzed to support their visions.
