The DRM Future of Subscription Based Cars

In this video I discuss the growing subscription based model of motor vehicles where people are having to pay an additional monthly fee or large one time fee to unlock heated seats or heated steering wheels when these features already exist in the cars.

Over a decade ago we used to complain about pre-loaded DLC on discs and cartridges, and look where we are now lol

Some of the first DRM on vehicles I noticed was with John Deere, blocking farmers from repairing their own stuff.

This has to be illegal, they are making you pay for the machinery in the car that does the functions but they aren't letting you use it until you pay the monthly ransom

Say “no” to vehicle subscriptions. The more we pay them, the more they will think it is OK to keep doing this. We will dig ourselves into an inescapable hole.

The final form of technological diabolism is the “traffic law compliance computer”, one day when you put the car in drive without the seatbelt engaged, the mandatory dashboard computer will print out a ticket in real time and upload the violation to the police department. Don’t worry though, they’ll have a convenient app you can pay with!

I am excited to "drive" the pod and pay 30$ a month for a 50% reduction in chances that it will lock all doors and drive into a pole.

you can't just "if you don't like it, don't buy it" your way out of this. every company will miraculously do the same thing and force you to pay every month just to unlock your rear-right wheel

Ah yes, more opportunities for tuning companies to get into piracy

The saddest part is that not only there is people that accepts it as normal but some even embrace it and don't mind getting screwed like that.

I love how the actual copper wire/coil or whatever makes the heating element is physically there even if you never subscribe. This absolutely deserves to be hacked or physically hot-wired to a different physical toggle added to the dashboard or something.

Edit: I am not quite as bummed out on the acceleration issue because I could see some added maintenance/warranty concerns, but then the issue of non-transferrable lifetime subscriptions is an absurdity of unthinkable proportions.

The pain you have to endure while waiting the 10 seconds between starting the car and waiting for the ui to finish loading to stop the music blaring at full blast that you forgot to shut off the night before.

Having worked on BMW ECUs (SP2021), I can tell you that they take cybersecurity seriously. If at boot the platform security sub-system detects a change in the software or FEE (flash EEPROM emulation) then the whole microcontroller fries itself by design. It's even a hassle for just developing, because if you forget to turn this off (in production it can't be) you brick your dev board...

I see car manufacturers have caught up to on disc dlc and battle passes. I can’t wait to buy a house in the future and have to pay extra for the other rooms in my house.

gonna be a _fantastic_ future...when you freeze to death in your own car because the thing can't communicate with its servers to confirm you paid for the option to allow heat (which is present regardless) to pass from the engine into the cabin. could happen for any reason really, no signal, bmw doesn't exist anymore, your firmware is out of date, you were late on your last payment, etc.

I was part of a consultancy company like 10-12 years back where we were called in to train sales peeps. I remember seeing a small module around a subscription model for owning a car. Back then I thought it was a rent-to-own kinda thing. Man, was I wrong and this thing has been in the works for some time.

The difference from this and jailbraking phones is that these major manufacturers will lobby that open-source/jailbroke/custom software is dangerous. The law will look something like "sure, you can mod your car however you want to, however, for it to be street legal it will have to be running stock firmware/OS"

The sweet spot for vehicles in my mind is the early/mid-90s into the early 2000s... Reliable computers, that are not connected to the internet, controlling the engine's fuel and ignition timing; Not too many plastic engine parts. Still mostly repairable and mod-able by anyone willing... I'll be driving and maintaining my 90s shit-boxes for as long as I possibly can :)

It always starts off with the companies with the most respect. Apple was respected for popularizing and normalizing the smart phone, Tesla was respected for pushing the bar for electric cars, BMW/Mercedes/Audi were respected for being high class car brands. Now look where they've all fallen, and the worst part is, they take the whole industry with them.

I’ve seen this happen in videogames and I’m expecting to see it happen again in cars as mindless npcs happily march us all into dystopia

Chip-tuning has been a thing in the BMW scene for quite a while now. I would love to see this get extended into circumventing the new DRM locks.
