I’m calling it, Shanks is in no way trying to betray Luffy. He’s carrying out Roger’s will. Shanks knows where Laugh Tale is but he’s guarding its passage until Luffy comes along and rightfully gets to the One Piece with his own strength. Shanks WILL fight Luffy but it’s not going to be to the death it’s to test his mentality and his growth to live up to the standards of what people know of the “Joyboy”.

As a person who’s watched every single one piece episode twice every time a new one releases, I can confirm all this is misunderstood, shanks knew that only people who can swim will be able to survive the future disaster, that’s why he didn’t eat the fruit, it was meant for him to use the fruit to summon back joyboy with the fruit and the one piece, and when he saw buggy got sick when Roger went to raftel, he realized only none devil fruit users were able to go there, so none of his crew mates ate it, that’s why he locked it in a chest, so they could make other use of the fruit, the theory that he brought it for ace is confirmed to be busted, and wasn’t true, but luffy ate it, shanks was scared because he knows that he can no longer summon joyboy, unless he brought joyboy to him, which is why he gave him the straw hat and asked him to give it back when he became a great pirate, which means he would go to shanks after he gets his joyboy form, also why it’s confirmed one piece is near it’s end, so when he unlocks his joyboy form, only it can make it to raftel out of all the fruits, so after he got his joyboy form he’s gonna give the straw hat back to shanks, which will probably be located in raftel so he can use luffy to summon joyboy, then luffy will fight shanks for the one piece, the attacks will be so huge the marines will come and so will the others, including imu, then that’s were the big war over the one piece will happen, the pirates will start to lose against the marines so luffy will take the one piece with his joyboy form on which will summon joyboy, joyboy will release his haki and the pirates will win, explaining why imu was scared bc she thought the war started when the robot unleashed joyboys haki with the knot, so that’s why when shanks saw luffy’s bounty poster with his joyboy form he went to get the one piece in time and then luffy will come to him and give him the straw hat and the war will happen.

The reason shanks has no devil fruit users in his crew is because they cannot go through the barrier to get to laugh tale. You see this when shanks is an apprentice in Rogers crew. He could go through the barrier but buggy couldn't. So you may be wandering how will luffy get through? I wondered this too so I did my research, and it turns out only nika/joyboy CAN get through
