My Favourite Landscape Photography Spot of 2018 | BTS at White Sands

White Sands National Monument is one of the best places in the US for landscape photography. This is the BTS from my shoot there this week.
For more of my landscape photography find me on IG at @brendanvanson.
We made the trip to White sands, New Mexico to do some sunset landscape photography. We arrived pretty late, as this is just a stop on the way east. But, we definitely made on time to give you a behind the scenes on one of my favourite landscape photography shoots thus far in 2018.
White Sands is just a brilliant place, and one of the coolest locations for landscape photography. Of course, it can also be a little bit of a frustrating location as it's so beautiful, so vast, and maybe a little bit hard to capture all that beauty. But, in the end, I think I managed to produce a number of really cool photos from this shoot.
Along the way, on this BTS episode, I give my travel and landscape photography tips and walk you through how I made certain photos. As a travel photographer, you have to be prepared for a number of different situations. And, you can't really go to a place looking for just one photo, but a variety of them. I think there's some cool ones here.
There are more photo tips and tutorials coming up on the photography channel tomorrow. I'll see you there!

I would be going crazy there, no wonder you go back. White and pastels, beautiful portraits. Jodi's glasses are perfect for those shots.

I like all of your shots, but the photo at 7:10 is absolutely amazing! Great work!

BTW, as I've done a translation of the description of the vidéo and added the French subtitles. I can do that time to time… (it is quite time consuming :) )

Amazing images! I wish they would have had the park open for another 30 minutes or so, cause I did not want to put my camera away when that sunset was just getting really good, to run back to my car so we could make it out in time.

Great video and fantastic images. Especially liked the ones you took of Jodie in her red coat.

living in Phoenix, I use a CPL a lot for seperating the blue skys and mountains, I'm surprised you don't use it more in your work. Only works north south, I know, but in White Sands you really could have gotten some great shots.

The best phone app purchase I ever made was Backcountry Navigator. Absolutely awesome GPS map app for wilderness travel. Just pre-download satellite maps or topo maps when you're on wifi or 4G, and then go into airplane mode but leave your location settings on when you go out into the wilderness. Mark your car / campsite, make a track of your footsteps, and follow them back! It also acts as a GPS logger for geotagging your photos later, if you so desire.

Wow, that place is crazy! It would blow my mind :) Really love the portrait shots you got of Jodie, so cool. And wearing her red coat too against that back drop of white sands is an awesome way to use colour, as to when in a few vlogs ago, you both wore red! Love it! !
Fab images :) & the colours in the sky just after sunset with pink, purple & blues are just gorgeous! Fascinating place :)

You need two way radio. It's handy for directing models three sand dunes away.

I have a phone and a tablet with SIM. Provided that I have coverage, I think I could leave one in the car and use the other to get back.

Or note my parking spot with Google maps.

Just gave me a new bucket list location, have been to New Mexico but didn't drive to far south of I40 as we tried to follow the old Route 66, most of 66 is lost due to I40 or reclaimed by farmland, which is sad, understand best part is between flagstaff Arizona and California, But anyway cut along story short wipes drool off face ;-)
Planning new road trip / redoing old or down south so be interesting to see what you guys trip over on the way.

Have a safe trip! I hope you enjoy Austin!

Looks like the real challenge in this location is conveying that it's actually a sandy desert. My Canadian eyes kept seeing frozen tundra, no matter how hard I tried to convince myself otherwise!

New to photography. Do you need a filter for lens? What kind? Thx!
