Nature doesn't have feelings or empathy it just does what it does according to her rules. It sucks for those chicks, but I'm sure plenty of young snakes that just got hatched get eaten by birds just the same. We tend to anthropomorphize nature and hate to see cute things destroyed and don't care when the ugly ones perish.

Fact of the matter is, only about 1 in 4 baby birds make it. The rest become food for other critters that raid the nest. It’s not cruel or unjust, it’s just nature in action. Birds are incredibly plentiful, so enough of them survive.
