That wasn't close to him. Optical illusion. He's at the back of the stage (for a reason) and the pyro was past the front of the stage.

He was actually about 6 feet behind the the flame, and knew where it would be coming from, so therefore he knew where NOT to be standing, lol. Since the accident in '92, the pyrotechnicians and Metallica have had better communication on when and where everyone should be and at what times, so there is no repeat

No. if you know their stage set up, there is NO pyro anywhere near the drum riser, which is where James was standing when this was filmed.The flash was a good 10 feet away from James. Pull up any video with their current stadium stage set-up and you will see exactly what I'm talking about.

@Someoneyouthinkuknow He didn't shield himself. He knew that the pyros are about to blow, so he had to do something badass - like moving his arm around after plucking the strings, hope you know what I mean.

It was nowhere James. Their pyro is front of stage. James was next to the drums which is a good 10 feet from where the pyro is. The camera angle just makes it appear closer.

Actually no, he didn't. The pyro is synced with the music. James' hand going up at the end is his continuation of playing the guitar. He then moves forward, steps up and off the drum riser and you can see his arm going right back to the guitar for the next note. The camera guy reacts because it's hot and VERY bright. There's no reaction of any kind from James here as it relates to the pyro going off.
