Persepolis is an important archaeological site and historical settlement that was the capital of the ancient Persian Empire and is located in the present-day Fars province of Iran. Founded by Cyrus the Great, the greatest king of the Persian Empire, in the mid-6th century BC, Persepolis developed over time as the capital of the empire.
The construction of Persepolis continued and was largely completed during the reigns of Darius I (522-486 BC) and Xerxes I (486-465 BC), the successors of Cyrus the Great. During this period, the Persian Empire became a large empire that spread over a wide geography, and Persepolis was used as the administrative center and ceremonial capital of the empire.
Persepolis is a complex full of palaces, temples, monumental staircases and statues built on large stone platforms. Great feasts and ceremonies organized by the empire were held here. However, this wealth and magnificent structures ended with Alexander's conquest of the Persian Empire in 330 BC, and Persepolis never regained its former glory.
