Almost 230 refugees rescued off Libya's coast

A Spanish aid agency rescued almost 230 refugees from the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya on Thursday.

The refugees, now being processed in Italy's Sicily, were trying to make the dangerous crossing from Africa into Europe.

In 2017, almost 30,000 people have left Libya, Egypt and Turkey in often flimsy, overcrowded boats, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Al Jazeera's Victoria Gatenby explains.

It's not that we shouldn't help, but the more refugees these countries accept, numbers will just keep increasing instead of decrease, maybe the EU and the UN should look at how to help improve their countries.

They are from different parts of Africa, many go to Libya because they believe that is closest to Italy (which it is)
