E46 330d with m57d30tu is my curent car i am keeping it stock its fast enough for me curently. Its fun enough and has great mpg considering performance. On roads where i live its faster than i need.

The m57 ports do not lend themselves toward porting. Cooling system upgrades are not necessary unless you plan on going beyond 350bhp mark. Bear in mind the 350bhp usually is accompanied by 750+ nm torque so thats plenty fast. That can be done on completely factory equipment and a good remap. Longer duration cams wont yield much benefit on an engine that only revs to 5k rpm. Freeing up the exhaust, wether it is removing the dpf or rear muffler, does yield noticable improvements in power and torque. The stock intake and exhaust is very restrictive. If u increase diameters even a small bit or remove restrictions you will feel it.

Have owned a couple manual e46 330d/330cds and have modded them to different extents. I now have an e53 x5 with same engine but is an auto - that’s the thing I’m concerned about, going for similar goals as last time but with the auto gearbox. I know these engines are brilliant! Thoughts on gearbox?

I got, e61 535d remapped to 360hp, deleted cat dpf flaps egr, thats all 😅

I'll keep my 530d standard thanks. The auto transmission is the limiting factor and enough reason not to remap.

Yeah, go ahead and remap it --just remember to buy all the o rings and oil seals which let go due to increased crankcase pressure. They are plenty quick enough stock !!

Ok my e53 m57 as follows I've cat backed the exhaust noticed a real gain there on acceleration then fitted a Piper cross filter the finally the remap which statistics take it from 218 to over 260 but then there is the cat back gains and the filter so what wauld you say it's running at I calculated it to over 280
