He's playing like Porcaro, exactly what this song needs. No overplaying, just impecable tasty grooves

I understand the musicality of his playing, I understand the depth of his pocket, I understand the sympathy to the other musicians, I understand the role he plays, and is comfortable playing...support, support, support. But for me the best part of this whole song is the sheer happiness that he shows in his playing. The smile, the happiness, the pure joy is both glorious to see and infectious in it's grooviness. Well done Mr. Rooney for your reaction, well done Mr. Soan for playing the music and playing for the music rather than for your own ego.

A great drummer can make the non drummers appreciate the drumming quality. A master can make great drummers appreciate the drumming quality. Ash is a master, and it shows on the faces of the greats in that room. As well as the musicians in ghost note.

Lucky enough to see Ash live and meet him. One of those players that just sounds like a faultless studio edit. Crazy talent and hard worker 👍

Thanks Andrew.

I loved the way Ash creates tension and anticipation with rests and a syncopated notes.

I think a lot of young drummers get swept up in chops side of playing. They are so blown away by super drummers playing insane flurries of notes, inhuman coordinated independence on huge drum kits that evoke mega-construction projects in their sheer size, scope and complexity of set-up, that they (the young drummers) miss the fact that it's playing pocket that makes up most of a working drummer's career; that if you want to be in demand as a session player, you need to be able to support the music and the other musicians with a rock solid groove. I'm nowhere near the level of cats like Ash Soan, but the times where I got the most compliments on my playing were those where I just played pocket grooves. As I was being complimented, I would be thinking: "But I didn't do anything special, man. Nothing flashy in the least." It made me realize that it's when the music feels good that people are the most moved; when they enjoyed it the most, whether they were in the audience or on the bandstand.

Thanks again, Andrew, for such an important lesson. You are doing a great service to the drumming community and I want you to know I appreciate it. I wish I had taken lessons from someone like you when I started playing. It would have made a huge difference. But I guess I'll settle for enjoying the lessons now.

Non-drummer here. He sounds like a "perfect" studio drummer to me. He is so "perfect" and constrained he never calls attention to himself. I can't hear "his" sound. Not sure that is always a good thing. Gavin Harris finds a way to have a signature without adding extra notes or overplaying. Carter Beauford, Larnell Lewis or even Nate Smith. Different animals but to me, more interesting "pocket" drummers to listen to. In my mind, the best drummers have a sound that separates them from the crowd.

When u see Stink Faces within the first seconds of a live performance.. U know its going to be Good.. Ash Soen was all smiles, but what's Not to smile about when u are making other people happy with your skill to entertain.. Top Notch choice Andy for picking Ash to React to.

Baard in Leprous plays that speed in a halftime shuffle in Illuminate (there is a drum play video for it), and does some amazing stuff with his feet inside it.

Definitely elevated that with insane pocket and hitting those accents on time. Just flowing smooth

that guy at the end in the Zildjian shirt that is in several other live videos is actor and musician Mark Sheppard. Drummer for several bands in the UK and also known for playing Crowley the king of hell in the tv series Supernatural. I know this because he was my favorite character on that show 😅

Was at college with Ash in the late 80s . We were both drummers and students on a course in popular music and recording

The fan that you were asking about at the end of the video I believe is the actor Mark Sheppard. I only know him from the television show Supernatural but I believe he has been in many other shows. He was also congratulating Gergo Borlai at the end of his performance. I believe he is also a drummer so that makes some sense.
