Take Your Chess Skills To The Next Level With High-Quality Courses

In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov introduces one of the most surprising and underrated chess openings for White—the Grob Attack (or Grob Opening). It starts with the unexpected move 1.g4, guaranteed to shock Black right from the outset!

At first glance, this may look like a beginner's mistake or a troll move, but here’s an interesting fact: fewer than 1% of chess games have used this opening, making it one of the rarest in chess (seriously, who develops a flank pawn on the first move?). This rarity often catches opponents completely off guard.

The Grob Attack is a super-tricky chess opening. If Black doesn't know how to respond properly, they can easily fall into a trap. In fact, in some variations of the Grob Gambit, White can deliver checkmate in just 10 moves.

While the Grob Opening may not be the best choice for serious tournament games, it’s highly effective in casual or blitz games. The opening is packed with deadly traps at almost every turn, and just one inaccurate move from Black could cost them the game.

Watch the full video lesson to learn all about the Grob Opening—the main opening moves, key strategies for White, how to respond to Black's 1...d5 and 1...e5, and, most importantly, some nasty traps you can use to surprise your opponents.

Long story short, this is my favorite opening. I had a tournament where I went 5-1 as white playing 1. g4, I beat my highest ever rated opponent with g4, trolled and gotten a bunch of good laughs against my friends with g4, and lastly I confused, then proceeded to beat my dad with g4 as well. Thanks for making an updated video about the greatest opening in chess!

Completely agree with Igor, it's rare that we see exact variations with these openings, but I learn more on what NOT to do when I face these stupid opening traps than I use them. 😀

Whenever opponents troll me with the Grob, I troll them back with 1. ...b5!?. This move renders White's most common followup of Bg2 a genuine tall pawn, because the b-pawn clamps down on any attempts at c4 by White. After g4 b5 Bg2, I then play d5 followed by e5 and get a really nice game for Black.

The only problem is my opponents don't cooperate

Bent Larsen was playing this at the top level back in the days, mad respect. The only problem with Grob is that your whole attack disappears when the opponent doesn't play according to plan, i mean e4 instead of d4, don't really like the type of play when you wish your opponent play the exact moves to make it even sense but still, i like niche openings like this, along with the Bird

Yes, "grob" ist the german word for "rough". Just strech the "o" a bit longer, then you pronounce it almost correctly. :)

Wow just tried it in a few games and won them all pretty easily. This should help get my blitz rating up which has been stagnating lately.

Qc8 is just a bad move, don't expect good players to play it, that's why I thought black was down a tempo at 5:55 but the black queen should be on d8 and c6 be played instead of Qc8 ever. You can refute this Grob nonsense with this line:
3... c6 4. Qb3 e6 5. Qxb7 Nd7 6. Qxc6 Rc8 7. Qa6 Rxc4 with a lot of piece activity and development. It's -1.3 for white even though it's equal material.
