A future for Taiwan's indigenous people | DW Documentary

The Atayal people are Taiwan’s second-largest indigenous group. Their culture is under threat, but Chen Peng-ling is keeping it alive with tourism-related projects.

The Atayal and other indigenous peoples in Taiwan were first persecuted by European colonizers, then by Chinese settlers, then by Japanese occupiers and after 1949 by the Kuomintang government. Three years ago, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen apologized to the indigenous peoples for the discrimination they had faced for centuries. Today, most young Atayal live in big cities and are unaware of their people’s traditional culture and language. This was the same for Chen Peng-ling too, but studying geography in Taipei she found out more about her roots. She decided to go back to the ancestral home where she has been campaigning to revive the traditions and culture of the Atayal ever since. A report by Uwe Schwering.

We don’t hear enough of the natives from Taiwan. Glad the GOV there is finally giving their culture a chance at survival.

It's such an honor to be a Taiwan indigenous... I really hope this initiative can help younger people connect to their roots. Our identity and pride as native people should not be forgotten. <3

I know this doesn’t make a difference but I hope it reaches someone who belongs to this culture. I am Pacific Islander, my family is Tongan, Fijian and Samoan. I am proud that our ancestors come from this place. The culture, the language and the ways they knew to survive they brought to the islands 3000 years ago. Who we are started with this place and the people who left their home 🥹. Even though I’m Pacific Islander I’m proud to carry on our ancestors legacy even though we’re very different now ❤️.

I’ve been to Taiwan three dozen times and it’s a lovely place. The indigenous people resemble the people of the South Pacific people such as the Samoans. In the extreme south more so. The flow of history is an ethereal thing.
