Gianandrea Noseda “has Verdi in his system... electric from start to finish” (The Guardian). No one brings out all the sweeping drama and passionate intensity of Verdi’s great masterpiece quite like Noseda. Pairing striking trumpet solos with sweeping symphonic and choral moments, Requiem is a legendary musical experience.

NSO Music Director Gianandrea Noseda's notes on the program:
"What more can I say about this masterpiece? Verdi’s Requiem is inexplicable—it’s an oratorio, opera, and a religious work all at once. I think this was Verdi’s ultimate attempt to get close to God. He was not a believer, but with this music he came very close to the divine because of his sheer sincerity—the integrity of Verdi in this piece is just supreme. When we bring together the NSO, The Washington Chorus, The Choral Arts Society of Washington, and soloists from Washington National Opera’s cast of Don Carlo to explore this legendary music, we will surely have an event to remember.
If you ask an Italian who best represents us, they may mention Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dante—or Verdi. Like these other icons of his caliber, Verdi was both a gigantic figure and very human, leaving behind a legacy and vision of pure artistic revolution that many of us from Italy—myself included—take great pride in celebrating. This work is one that is close to my heart, and I sincerely hope you will join me so that we can share it together."
