Truth. One of the reasons I didn't consider going into the army (but not the only one) was because I'd seen in an old 50s movie that their latrines in basic training didn't have stalls, that the toilets were in a line. No Way!

Growing up an Air Force brat I knew it was most likely that the the Air Force would respect men's privacy and I was right!

The Roman communal toilets aren't the odd part. Older army barracks often had a row of toilets along a wall without dividers or stalls, and i think even WW2 era naval ships had rows of toilets in the open (including the red "hot seats" you had to use if you had VD).

The part about Rome that grosses me out is the "wet sponge on a stick" used to wipe. Ok, that's fine. But they were communal, everyone used them...🤮
