This street interview was conducted in Shanghai, China, and we want to thank all our interviewees for sharing their honest views. Obviously the opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Chinese population, but that doesn’t mean they should get judged or ridiculed for speaking their mind. We want to cultivate an environment where people can have civilized discussions to bridge cultural gaps. As such, any personal name calling towards our interviewees will be deleted. What does having fair skin mean in your culture? Discuss

I've commented this a thousand times but let me say it again, "Eastern Asians have thousands years of tradition in skin whitening. Saying them whitening skin for whites is like saying Egyptians wearing eyeliners because of Hollywood."

It kind of makes me sad to see them all say that white people have better facial features. I always thought Asian people were so lovely looking.

Poor and misdirecting translation. They did not say better features at the first few questions, they said liti, which means more dimensional and pronounced, which is factual because asian features are flatter. They did not say western features are better.

Please change your translator because I've been noticing bad translation for your videos esp the Chinese ones, and as an avid watcher of Asian Boss videos this is very disappointing, unless your aim is actually not to show authentic Chinese insights.

Wanting fair skin doesn't mean that they want to look like Western people. In fact, fair skin had always been a beauty standard, because in ancient times, having fairer skin means you aren't outside doing hard work under the sun (like farmers). So having fair skin made you look more "high class". This isnt the case anymore, but the concept of fair skin is so deeply rooted that people still consider it as an ideal.

The lady in the purple dress answered the first question incredibly honestly and clearly, and always looking at the interviewer in the eye. And then she answered the second question just as self-assured and direct: "I don't think (bairen are more attractive) because I think I'm pretty the way I am". How many people would be able to answer such a question as candidly and gently as that, regardless of race or color? I love this lady to bits! Gives me hope for Chinese people.

I love the girl who said that she doesn't think white skin is prettier because she loves herself. She really is beautiful!!

The darker Chinese girl didn’t say “I think I’m pretty the way I am” she said “no, because i think I’m more beautiful” at 3:53

My mother told me that when I was little, I came crying to her because I wanted "pretty eyes" like my Asian friend (I'm caucasian). It's so interesting how beauty standards differ from place to place!

GUYS!!!The translation and her questions made this misunderstanding even bigger. Chinese' pursuit of brighter whiter skin has nothing to do with race! It's a beauty standard comes from ancient time when we didn't even know the existence or white people. Not sure why ancient chinese like jade-like skin. But for modern chinese girls, we know we have flatter face. Being a little brighter makes complements the gentleness of our smaller nose and eyes, being fair makes us feels not that flat and gives us more confidance. Fair skin makes us feels ourselves more girly, I guess due to ancient culture somehow as well. It's definately NOT about race. If chinese girls have more dimensional face that looks good with any skintone, nobody would cares about being brighter or not. We are always saying how sexy and healthy the dark skin foreign people look.

I'm white and I don't think I'm better looking than Asians. The woman are beautiful and the men tend to have strong jaw lines and chins.
