Steel or Playdough?

Open systems are much simpler in climbing. You can just clip in and be lowered, rather than having to untie, not drop your rope, and retie back in. That isn't rocket science but it adds risk that doesn't need to be there. Mussy hooks have their own risk if you climb above them and fall because the rope could fall into the hook and unclip itself. It's rare and unlikely but has happened. We have stainless steel ones because stainless hardware is ideal for 99% of climbing areas but usually if a developer need a mussy, it's because it's a heavily trafficked area that will wear out the lower off hardware before it corrodes. We'll get some plated steel ones soon.

Oh yea, this peeled at a constant pull of 72.06kN. 16,200lbf!
The SS mussy's unravelled for Climbing Taiwan at 33.21kN & 34.66kN. That is 2x as strong as your rope and anchors have two!

What's your favorite open system for climbing anchors?

The magic of plastic deformation so we can tell when things are going wrong and do something about it before just dying! Thanks steel!

The moment it starts experiencing any plastic deformation

I'll take plastic (as in able to be bent) over brittle any day. At least you can have a sense of how much damage somethings taken!

It's a new version of playdough that they made with metal instead of having to make stuff out of steel 😁

When it went, it went. I was hoping for maybe one extra neat frame as it finally slipped, But it goes from horizontal to gone in less then a frame.

i can already hear the binoculars guy saying "doesn't matter it's the ANSI standard" as we all contemplate never working in a particular state again at the expense of that man's nose.

Could be perfectly fine for the load rating. What is the load rating and what is the applied load?

The paramotor carribeaner vid has taught me to stay away from steel that isn't threaded closed. I argue in comments all the time, and some people fail to see the facts.

Depending upon the load rating, of you're within spec you're okay. Outside of those spec, no good.

I’d stop trusting it when it started doing that

You should stop trusting it the moment you decided to exceed its limits .
