I am very grateful she said this. My elderly parents have had to politely on several occasions now decline having a smart meter put in (they have never missed a bill and simply find the repetitive calls and now 3 in-person visits to their home intrusive).

To balance the requirement to provide heat and light to people who shouldn’t be on prepayment meters, together with people who are struggling to meet cost in a cost of living crisis is important, but then the other side the people who will just abuse the situation and not pay using this as a free ride. Too often in society we have the right thing spoiled by a few bad people who do the wrong thing, we must help do the right thing. To meet net zero we must insulated houses to a super high standard, install lighting and heating system which use less resources, and still then appliances will hab to also be changed to use less power. How can the less well off in society afford these items if they can not afford the basics? Economics of today needs to change again as it did when the NHS was created to bring value to all.
