Before we all get our vaccines, Paul spends this episode talking about Edward Jenner, "the father of immunology", and the discovery of how to beat smallpox. The road to vaccination was, in many ways, unethical and would be problematic if tried today. But thanks to Jenner, smallpox would become only in history and laboratory. One of two diseases that we have eradicated. Come and watch the video to see how.

I always thought that Jenner, after vaccinating the boy, then innoculated him.

You didn't mention the very dangerous process of innoculation or variolation which involved giving the patient, what was hoped would be, a mild form of smallpox. If you were lucky you would survive, without too many scars, and would then have natural immunity in the future, if not, you died. Position and wealth couldn’t help you, the Princes Octavius and Alfred, the youngest sons of George III both died after being inoculated.

So whilst the medical establishment might, reasonably be opposed to giving the boy cowpox, giving his smallpox was an established medical procedure. Indeed the last cartoon you showed depicts innoculators being driven away by vaccinators.
