It seems the Marketing and Tech Support divisions of Canon are on different pages and a lot of 90D users are very upset about it. Trust me, I have been attacked and blamed for the lens issues (this is kinda funny when I have nothing to do with the manufacture and marketing of the 90D). I have also been very vocal about its tracking and soft problems from day one. Had some sound issues, but the information is still good!

Thanks to a Canon 90D Facebook group member who forwarded these two responses to me!

I happen to agree with what you are saying with regards to older EF lenses not operating as well on a higher pixel rate cameras to the more relatively new EF lenses, it’s like almost all older technical items don’t work well with the increasingly rapid advancing technology.

please sir. I have a Tamron 18-400 lens, is it good with a Canon 90d camera?

Very similar to the 5ds r by the sounds of it; diffraction kicks in sooner and the higher mp sensor will demand very sharp glass for best results. Not to menton that it will demand a more refined technique when out shooting.

I have a CANON 80d I was planning on upgrading to the 90d. After this video I’m very hesitant!! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!

When you are saying that the higher megapixel cameras won't render out a photo as sharp using the entry level lens when compared to a lower megapixel camera with the same lens, are you saying that a pixel-to-pixel level? Or image as a whole? Because I have a hard time understanding how more megapixels would negativity affect sharpness when comparing the image as a whole. Theoretically, you'd just be able to downsample the higher mp image to equal resolutions as the lower mp and have the image near identical.

Is there a comprehensive list anywhere of which lenses people have found to work well with the 90D and which haven't? I have a 60D and I'm thinking of upgrading, but if I would need to buy new lenses I might be better off upgrading to an 80D.

On an overall aspect, would you recommend this camera for someone who is novice/mid-novice with photography? I am going to join a masters program here photography and video shoots are a core aspect and I am trying to figure out which camera to buy. I am leaning towards canon cause I have used some of them in the past and the design and the button layout seems quite natural to me. I am expected to buy something with an APS-C sensor or a mirrorless camera as per the course director but I don't want to splurge far too much on the mirrorless cameras. My expectations and research on 800D initially led me to the 80D which is being claimed as better for video specifically. But the 80 D being quite older a model worries me.

And should I be considering the rise of RF lenses as a key issue? I have thought of it and for someone like me, it just seems like an investment too soon (if even necessary) and I don't think I'd want that at this time.

I was also considering the EOS R but that is frankly too far out of the budget for now. Any idea if the release of the R5 and R6 will help dent the costs there?

Hola, Michael. Could you get me out of a question about whether the Canon 90D accepts 3-pin radio receivers? or know what types of radio receivers you use for flash. Thank you

Hi Michael, Do you think that the Canon tech might have meant to use an aperture value lower than f/8 to avoid diffraction. Instead of saying to stop down the lens, is it possible he might be saying not to close it down past the point where diffraction would set in?

Canon will probably fire that tech guy. He should not be telling people that Ef-s lenses are not good enough for the 90D. That information, if true, should be coming from on-high and should have been made clear at the point of sale. Also, I don’t think a typical Ef-s lens should produce soft images on the 90D just because of the denser sensor, they should actually be as sharp as is possible with that lens, assuming no other issue is at play like poor technique or insufficient shutter speed. Anyone getting soft images simply doesn’t know how to use the camera in a way that allows the camera to do what it can do. User error!

Love the "told you so smile". We knew it glad to see at least the technical team admit to it.

Michael the Canon letter says use an Fstop less than F8. You have interpreted that as stopping down ie going to F11 etc narrowing the aperture, other people take it to mean changing aperture toward F5, 6 that is making the F number less and widening the aperture. Can you please clear this up?

Funny, right now, I'm waiting for the UPS guy to delivery my 90D with a 55-250mm lens.

Somehow an awful lot of people don't recognize that better resolution can show imperfections just as easily as it can show better detail. Any particular point in the field of view will reflect photons to the entire front surface of the lens. With a hypothetical perfect lens every one of those photons would land in exactly the right spot on the sensor, but with real lenses they just end up close to where they should be (with variations based on where the photon hit the front of the lens and it wavelength. As long as that spot is still in the right pixel everything is fine, but when you add more pixels they all get smaller. Since there's no such thing as a perfect lens at some point the pixels are small enough that too many photons land on the wrong pixel and the detail is no longer as sharp as possible. For a kit lens on an APS-C sensor maybe that happens at 30 to 40 MP, but for a better lens everything works up to 60 or 80 MP. With a hypothetical sensor that has 2500MP even the very best lens will result in an image that's not sharp.

Not only do higher resolutions require sufficient lens accuracy, they requires your technique to be better. Motion blur or incorrect focus are other ways that photons can land in the wrong place, and what doesn't show at 12 to 18MP may be really perceptible at 24 to 32 MP and absolutely terrible at 40 to 50MP.

Almost everybody probably already knows that from a different perspective, but doesn't make the connection. Any image will look lousy if you zoom in enough, and using more pixels to capture the same image is the equivalent of zooming in.

My biggest question right now is, since Canon are releasing these megapixel monsters, will we see new lens releases to complement their exceptional detail? This was my concern back when the 5DSR was released. If not, Canon is forcing us to go to third parties for capable lenses. If the answer is that we need to invest in RF systems to get optimal image quality, all of us DSLR users might as well switch to completely new systems. I would like to see an EF roadmap for lens refreshes for the next few years, but that is probably not coming any time soon...

I no longer have lens issues with the 90D WHY, because I was on the F/book group & saw all the frustrations there, So promptly SOLD it after 6 weeks of ownership, stuck with my 80D after selling my 70D to upgrade to 90D :-)

What's the newest on this? I'm getting soft focus on my 90D using a EF 50mm f/1.8 STM but I only notice it in video recordings. My photos with the same setup have come out fine.

How does 90d AF tracking handle a fast moving subject towards the camera? I would appreciate any suggestions and tips. Thank you!

I have yet to see any issues of resolution with any EF or EF-S lenses. The only issue has been under-exposure by 1 and 1/3 stops on Tamron and Sigma lenses. I have detailed this issue with Sigma Tech Support, and their fix is to send the lens back to them for updating the firmware. I have several Sigma lenses, and my fix is simple; set exposure compensation +1 1/3 and save in C1.

I'm having a great time with the 90D. And I'm used to the menu structure and what to set to acquire sharpness.

I´m now really reconsidering my plan to upgrade from my Rebel to the 90D. I don't want to have to replace my lenses along with my camera body. If I was going to have to do that, I might as well opt for a full frame DSLR.
