People are always asking me if I have veneers on my teeth and the answer is NO. Don't get me wrong, there's a time and place for veneers and they're a great tool to help you achieve the smile you want. That said, I feel like full dental restorations with veneers on healthy teeth are being glamorized on TikTok and Instagram and people aren't considering some of the cons that come with this procedure. That's why I reached out to dentists to get their thoughts about the cost of veneers and the pros and cons.

This is such a healthy and responsible discussion. Veneers are often glamorized and while there is definitely a place for them it is important to highlight the major commitment that they are. It is an irreversible process and important to go to someone who is seasoned! Well done! Thank you for letting me be a part of your video :)

I'm someone with Veneers. The front set (I did first) were fine. No issues. The lower set (done 10 years later) were another story. The pain. Not just during (hot teeth that would not numb) but the aftermath of pain was so intense. It took 3 months for them to settle. The lower are also more 'brittle' and prone to issues. It was a miserable process and one I wish I would undo. While they look better the pain and issues just weren't worth it.

I'm 49 and have had my full mouth veneers/crowns for a little over a year. I got them because of a medical condition (Sjogren's Syndrome/lupus) that was rapidly destroying my teeth despite 2-3x per year of dental cleanings since early childhood. The dentist had been seeing me for 20 years so he was very familiar with me and the decline. My teeth were turning almost translucent. Weird yellow-y, beige color (pretty, right?). Whitening didn't work anymore. He finally agreed that it was probably time for veneers--he had been taking the conservative approach through the years to avoid this extreme. He clearly went over the pros and all the cons. Braces (invisalign) were first required. I tried to tell him no just go with veneers but he refused saying that I'd hate the result and it would be a waste of money. That was a year's time and $5500. Patience is key, though I absolutely hated having to wait. My orthodontist and dentist regularly communicated on my progress. Once the braces were done, the dentist had the lab tech come and we all met to decide shapes, colors that would be most flattering to me personally (no toilet bowl white color for me). Temps put in for a couple of weeks. All the veneers/crowns were made at once to ensure consistency. Top set done which took literally all day. Week or so later the bottoms were done--again an all day process. During both appointments, the lab tech was present to refine each and every tooth. Once I saw the before and after pictures I cried. I had no idea exactly how bad my teeth had gotten. That cost was $24, 000. Yes, almost $30, 000 total but worth every penny in the end. My point in all this---don't rush the process, find a practitioner that is willing to collaborate and accept nothing less than perfection that is individually tailored to you. I'd run from anyone that would agree to grind and glue, like the Turkish doctors.

I'm so glad you made this video. I'm seeing 19 year olds rushing to get veneers without doing their research, finding the right dentist/dental surgery, and not weighing other options. They aren't being told that this is not a one time thing. Social media really has people thinking everything is wrong with how you look and you need to take drastic measures to get it fixed while you are young.

I always wanted veneers even when I was in high school. I'd say to myself "when I get a job, first thing I'm gonna save up for is veneers!"
This video has changed my mind in 15 mins.

My dentist is from Italy. I had two front teeth that I wanted fixed. I asked about braces, and he said absolutely not lol he said he will never understand why Americans are obsessed with perfectly straight teeth. He said my alignment was fine and braces would be ridiculous. Made me feel good!

I got Veneers on my front 4 top teeth when I was 35 as they all had root canals on them when I was 11 after falling off my bike and damaging them. Mine just had a slight shaving to each tooth and I'm really happy with how it looks and gives me the confidence to smile instead of the broken and off colour I use to have I saved up for a few years and was ever so proud that I did that myself.

Some ppl don’t need veneers they just need braces and a teeth bleaching.

It's great that actual dentists go on social media and especially on Tik Tok to address this!
Full set of veneers shouldn't be your first choice unless you have a medical necessity for it or your teeth truly are your absolute biggest insecurity.

When I was 25, I really wanted veneers because I was insecure about my teeth/smile even after braces. I’m now 31 and I am SO RELIEVED that I did not get them and I really love my smile. Sometimes if you want to change something on the outside, something on the inside needs to change first 🥰 I’m so thankful to have natural, healthy, beautiful teeth!

My veneers are over 35 years old, I'm 66 now. I've taken care of them normally as you would your real teeth. My current dentist is amazed at how long they have lasted. So ... 8 - 10 years? Interesting. My veneers are on the upper four front teeth.

I know someone who got porcelain to metal crowns on her top teeth when we were in our mid 20s. It’s been less than 5 years but her gum line receded and you can see the grey metal around her gum line, on these “perfect” teeth she felt pressured to buy (pressured by social media and her industry.) She’s having to get that fixed after just a few years, so it’s really, really important to understand a full reconstruction takes maintenance. This video is exactly right

I had my two front teeth veneered (porcelain) when I was 19. I am 30 now and they are still strong and healthy. Key is, you have to keep them clean and get regular dental cleanings as well! Waterpics work wonders too 😊

I asked my dentist if I should get veneers. He said "no!!!". He said don't mess around with your teeth, unless you got a cavity or need a root canal. He said trust me lol and sent me out of his office. Thanks to him lol

Coming from someone who has worked on dentistry for 8+ years - crowns are only an option for those who really struggle with the appearance of their front teeth, and I mean really. If you have a stump tooth/teeth in the front then yeah, maybe, otherwise stay away. 1.This is an irreversible process that almost always includes spending further money regularly for recements and replacements. 2. Teeth that have been shaved down have a high chance of dying. This gives you a higher chance of loosing the tooth all together, even if you get a root canal treatment. 3. Veneers, crowns and bridges require extra hygiene measures, including regular deep cleans with a hygienist. This is very costly, adding to the already large bill, and even if you do go regularly, you're still more susceptible to gum disease which leads to tooth loss. 4. As time goes by, you change, trends change and so does progress. You're gonna shave down your teeth to a point of no return, and in a few years a new method will come out that could have solved your problem without causing damage. Try whitening, straightening or composite bonding. This is usually enough, since beautiful doesn't mean Simon Cowell type of white, tik tak looking teeth. Beautiful teeth are healthy, functional and clean.
4. It's painful. Once local anaesthetic wears off, the sensitivity is almost unbearable and lasts for a long time. Add the possibility of a tooth dying, and you'll be jumping through the roof

As a 16 year old, I got six veneers on my top teeth. I was super self conscious of my fluoride marks on my teeth. I also was a competitive figure skater that felt the pressure to have a great smile. Because my teeth were straight, I didn’t need any other dental work, so my mother bartered with a dentist who did an AMAZING job on my teeth. He sat down to talk to me about how I would need to accept that these would need to be replaced when I was about 30 and that this was a lifetime change to my mouth. I accepted that. I was THRILLED with the outcome and now at the age of 41, I still have his six veneers. I have taken such care of them because I know that they grind away more of your tooth now then they did when my top six teeth were done. Looking back, I know I hated people asking me about my fluoride spotted teeth. As an adult, I don’t think it would bother me so much, but then again - I smile a lot - I am glad I did it, I am aware of what will need to probably be done in the future. I don’t know if I would do more than my front six, maybe I’d go with my top eight? But I love how my smile turned out and thankful my mother found a way to barter the work.

Im 31. When I was a teen, tv shows like "Extreme Makeover" made me feel like I NEEDED veneers or else I would never be pretty. My teeth are actually great but media that hyperfocuses on perfection above all else is not healthy for young people. Boy am I glad I was always way too broke for veneers.

Okay I saw the thumbnail and thought that this video was going to go in a different direction! I’m a dental assistant and have been a dental assistant for almost 10 years now! I really don’t like the misinformation on the internet around veneers. Like you said, if they’re shaving down a majority of that tooth above the gum line, those are not veneers! It bothers me much when someone posts about getting veneers and shows a “during” photo and they’re shaved to little nubs 🥴 makes me so sad cause it feels they may have been taken advantage of. Since I am someone in the dental field, I think this video is great, informative and definitely a video people should look at while researching veneers.
