People, if you don't prepare your kindling and initial birds nest to receive a spark you'll never get a fire going. You need practice lighting fires with a ferro rod.

Cool idea but if people want to save a few bucks I recommend salvaging the cotton out of the filters of cigarette buts. I don't smoke but you can't really go anywhere without seeing buts on the ground. They stink when they burn once they been used but they'll get a fire started for free

You can still put a few wraps of gorilla tape around the handle, and have the best of both schools of thought on what makes the best ferrocerium rod handle. 😉👍

Ferro rods should last on average 10, 000 strikes. You will need to be one hell of a pyromaniac to need a replacement.
