Review - MUFASA: THE LION KING (2024) #mufasa

Live-action Disney prequel is passable when it's being an admittedly absurd original(ish?) story of its own, less so when it's delivering overly-complicated backstory for mythology details we either didn't ask about or didn't need to know. Please, stop making entire movies to address things that only video essayists sort-of cared about 10 years ago.

My personal headcannon was that the Lion King was actually the semi mythological founding story of the civilisation from Zootopia and the really important part was Simba switching to insect based diet to peacefully live amongst herbivores.

After seeing the trailers, it’s CRAZY to me that Simba/Mufasa’s schism stems from a girl and not the “fundamental difference in how they view other species” thing that seems to be a running gag.

All lion cubs are raised by female lions in real life, wtf is this movie smoking. And male Lions, the ones that survive into adulthood are excellent hunters or they starve. Male Lions are exiled from their prides once they become teenagers, and they have to hunt by themselves until they are big and strong enough to defeat an adult male Lion with his own pride to take over. The only help they get is that sometimes brothers will form an alliance and hunt together and share a pride because of strenght in numbers, but that is it. This lead to a situation where the male Lions who reach adulthood and have a pride are excellent hunters.

I thought Mufasa's 'Circle of Life' explanation from the original was perfectly reasonable: they are all happy to be eaten by the lions bc they know the nutrients will eventually get back to the soil and grass, at which point they get to eat them. And that would translate into more nutrients for them, obviously, even though it was their nutrients to begin with and they are dead... frankly the lions are doing them a favour; if they were self-interested they would be feeding themselves to themselves.
