In this edition of Watch and Learn, Krames shows us how to get a Chopped and Screwed effect using Serato. Started in Houston by DJ Screw, the technique is characterized by slowing down vinyl records, capturing a specific groove and chasing doubles of the same record. This is NOT a tutorial on doing it like the man himself, but a way to achieve something like DJ Screw's invention using Serato DJ.

to get the authentic "screw" sound requires the use of a tape deck... and being recorded at REGULAR speed..then slowed down

For those who have certain equipment and want to keep the sound alive, this is actually helpful.
without just saying "if it ain't screw ___" when they're likely not musicians themselves? lmfao youtube...

Why reduce the rpm? And why need instant doubles? You can just apply the track to both turntables with the push of a button. It just seems like you're complicating a simple technique.

Smh, all wrong chop was definitely to fast to be even so called "Screwed and Chopped.

Technics only went down to a -8 back in the day.

DJ Screw would slow the mix down again when it was recorded which could be anywhere from another -1 -- -8 on the other device.

That's how you would get the slowed down voices.

If you put a digital version of a Dj Screw song on and speed it up to about +8 -+10ish, you can have a sense of what the pitch was that it was recorded at.

Most of his mixes were mixed at regular speed and then slowed down. Dude was cold on the tables!

Screw music is not associated with Serato. Why go through changing the settings? Just drop the pitch control. 🤦🏿‍♂️ 🔩🆙

RIP Screw 💙

-24% not 25. I just did this in a daw, the original pitch track is -6db under the low pitch track. Let the normal pitch chase. Here how his pitch is off? 24% not 25.

robert earl davis rolling over in his grave. Let's see what these "dj's" can do with two turntables, headphones, a 2 channel analog mixer and a crate of records, and that's it. I'd love to see these bjdj's make it 10 minutes (let alone a standard 2 hour mix tape) on two tables with clean drops, clean transitions, I won't ask for a chop, or a rewind. Screw, along with true DJ's had to mix based off of ear, taste, adaptability, oh and when Screw recorded a mix tape, it was in real time and only chopped (pitch was slowed down post production) so you used to have to be quick, and spend some time crate digging, curating your chops. Would love to see how many djs would stick with it if their "controller" (fml that's weak) had no auto-sync, no streaming content, no hot cues.

I might sound like the cranky old guy (I'm in my late twenties) and i'd be just as pissed if all of a sudden guitar hero controllers or auto pianos became acceptable. It'll probably happen at some point. Just remember to you dorks who live on a midi machine, analog instruments don't depend on battery dependent comps. God's speed. I'm going to put on a gray TAPE - nerds

No diss @ any H-town screw head.
