I can see the quality of this yacht and Jimmy Cornell is a big plus in the design. I’m well impressed. Love this boat and wish the new owners fair winds and happy sailing!

I've never sailed before... but this has become my dream boat. I envision sailing to different locations with dirt bikes stowed away somehow and exploring single track trails in exotic places... Come on lottery! Hit THIS time!

"A whale hit us" or you hit the Whale?

Hello David and Karin. Congratulations on your new Garcia Exploration 45! You are the perfect people to talk with, given that my wife and I are looking closely at this yacht and a similar size Hallberg-Rassy. I understand if you would prefer not to talk about it, but I'll venture the question - upon meeting that whale with your HR 48 what damage in particular caused it to go swimming with the fishes? In case your keyboard is well stocked with characters at present, I'll ask a couple more. :-) To what extent do you feel your experience with the HR steered you towards the Garcia? Pros, cons, tradeoffs between the two, in your eyes? In my eyes, I see the HRs as great for enjoyable sailing, while there's no doubt about the Garcia's utility and robustness. Can you comment on differences in feel, handling and seakindliness? And, you mentioned Gibraltar as a first destination. Will you be making the most of boat work opportunities there? Recommendations? Thanks for any clues. Regards, Rick.
Edit - I’ve found an article in The Mirror about your encounter with the whale, which I expect was longer than the 10 feet used by the journalist. 🤨 Your description of the tail being as wide as your 10 foot long tender should’ve been a good clue that the whale was a whopper! Hmmm, scary situation, resulting in the hull of your HR 48 cracking and leaking. I guess it’s obvious that this has contributed to you choosing a welded aluminium alloy hull. But would it really be less susceptible to being breached by a similar impact? Perhaps Mark at Garcia can offer an assessment. 🙂

How were you rescued after the whale hit your boat? What were the damages occurred?

Out of all the scary things that can happen while sailing, hitting/being hit by a whale tops my list lol
