My cousin was an 8 year marine, got out, decided he didn’t like civilian life. Went into the army (sniper MOS) attained the rank of SFC, got deployed to Iraq in ‘04. Got killed. Posthumous promotion to MSgt. He was only in country 2 weeks. I went to ‘Nam in ‘69, in country 41 days, blown up, hospital 4 months and they made me a clerk typist from 11B. You do good work Chris, keep it up.

We had a couple of prior Marines in our unit. One claimed that he couldn't get promoted to E-5 while in the Marine Corps. He came in the Army as an E-4 and went directly to AIT. He was also allowed to wear his Marine Corps expert rifle badge and his Marine Corps good conduct ribbon on his Army dress greens according to AR 670-1 as well.

You don’t have to go to basic from the Marines to the army, but you do from any other branch.

We had a few prior marines with us in our platoon in the army. I also have met a lot of people who transferred to the army after their navy stint because they didn’t feel the navy offered enough challenge and didn’t have the brotherhood that we have

Can you do a video on transferring from Active Duty to National Guard?

After leaving the Army in1982 I tried to join the Air Force and was told they didn`t have a retraining program whatever that meant. I didn`t need to be retrained for anything I was already prior service all I felt I needed to do was pick an MOS and go to that school. During my time in the Army I knew ex-Marines, and ex-Coast Guard, but these were guys who left their previous branches and reenlisted in the Army.

I served as a Marine grunt in Vietnam and after a four break joined the Army. Went from E-2 to CSM in 17years in the Army infantry. It is a no brainer which branch has the most opportunities if you wish to serve. I would never go to combat again with the Corps is the bottom line for me. Go Army!!

I joined the Navy to travel, but once I scratch that itch I wanna settle down in one place. Fort Bragg is right down the road from my moms house so I’m trying to see if it’s better to work there as a civilian contractor or stay in service and just change branches

Ill help out chris since there weren't too many insights to the topic... This apply to those in service but thinking about getting out soon/transfering branches or already out in AR or in the IRR(Hopefully you went the IRR route due to time contraints... read below)

So going by your post you are in IRR, which I was myself. I was air force, got out into irr and then decided to go active army. Have your recruiter start your DD form 368, you and the recruiter will sign the form and he will submit it to the big army reserve.
Hopefully if you went the IRR route, you do not have immediate leadership. Which means the process of getting the DD form 368 signed will be expedited(they have 30 days to sign it) (Can take MONTHS to a year if AR)A Flag officer will sign it off. I submitted mine 23 Oct 18 and received it back signed 09 Nov 18. In the mean time, work and complete your package as much as you can(enlistment application, previous employers/friends, fingerprints etc...)
Dont push the recruiter much, itll only annoy him. He cannot press forward or send you to meps until you get that thing back signed. Make sure you have your medical records ready and all that as well.

It's a bit confusing I know. Overall, the reason why you need that DD form 368 is because you need to be CONDITIONALLY released from the "reserve" so you can be placed back into active duty. In my case, I have 30 days to swear in and sign on the dotted line... And only then have i met my obligation for the release(otherwise I'm still in the IRR) Also look up prior service business rules per your rank and TIS for MOS selection (TIS when you got out)
Sorry if I over explained things but I just wanted to make sure you feel assured of the process.

If planning to get out go IRR and NOT active reserve. If you go AR, you will be at the pity of leadership once again. The beauty of IRR is you are essentially a civilian.. no military leadership having any say of what goals you're trying to pursue. ETS, get that dd214, go to which ever branch recruiter and do exactly what I stated from my last paragraph. Ask your recruiter about prior service rules as far as jobs available etc... And Again... DO NOT GO ACTIVE RESERVE OR GUARD... Assuming you want to get out and transfer branches OR have it in your head that it may be an option down the road if things dont work out civilian side. They will pressure you hardcore to go AR... trust me. Do. Not. Do. It.

Let me know if you have any additional questions pertaining to cross branching or simply ETSing 👍
