Depressing does not even begin to describe it. It sometimes feels to me that Hugo has a particular love for making some of his characters die heartbroken and alone, or meaningless deaths.

I remember trying to read this as a kid....I got maybe 1 or 2 pages in before deciding to return it. That said, Disney did a good job adapting a book that written solely to describe a church building.

The saddest part to me about the version which I read was that when Quasimodo and Esmeralda's respective skeletons were separated from the embrace, Quasimodo's bones, symbolically, crumbled to pieces. 😢

The original story is sad, but it’s kind of sweet that he spent his last moments with the one person who ever showed him kindness.

Oh also Quasimodo is MASSIVELY strong in the books. He is able to just hop onto a bell that is several metric tonnes in weight and just swing it around FOR FUN

Love triangle???? That’s a whole love pyramid, with Esmeralda being at the center of it. But ahhh Frollo’s end is just as satisfying🙃😈

The moral of the story: LIFE'S A BITCH, AND THEN YOU DIE.

Major plot point left out every iteration is that esmeralda is the missing daughter of the town nut who went crazy when her daughter was kidnapped only to realize the woman she hated most (esmeralda) was in fact her missing daughter... also phebeous had that dawg in him and only wanted cheeks... esmeralda is also only 16... secondary underlying story is Victor Hugo complaining about the architectural change with paris..

Fun fact, Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame is based on the Opera written years later by Victor Hugo, La Esmeralda rather than the actual novel. In La Esmeralda, Phoebus and Esmeralda get married and have a happy ending.

You left out the part where Esmeralda was just a child, and Phoebus was a complete jerk who treated her like garbage, exploiting her crush on him to get what he wanted from her.

Victor Hugo is a master French writer. Hated by the powers that be during his life, he often wrote of royalty falling in love with peasants, corrupt clergy, regicide.... Hugo was so loved by his countrymen, as he lay on his deathbed, countless thousands of fans paraded up & down his street to celebrate his life's work. A true national hero.

Yes. I remember reading this as a kid. Though a few details are blurry. What I do remember is Phoebus in the book is a complete A hole. He knew Esme was deeply madly in love with him but he just brushed her off like she's nothing. Even during her last moments she screams for Phoebus believing he'll come to save her. What's even more tragic is that the crazy lady locked in the prison believed Esme to be some sort of heretic and hated her guts to bits only to realize that Esme's actually her long lost daughter.

When this movie came out, my best friend and I used a line from Heavy Metal to explain the difference in the source material: "You die, she dies, everybody dies."

Still a hundred times better if a change compare to how they made Zeus a loving person.

In the book, Esmeralda isn’t actually Romani, Quasimodo is. Esmeralda was a white French girl named originally named Agnès. Quasimodo‘s mother kidnapped Agnès and left Quasimodo in her place. When Agnès’ mother went to check on her and found the deformed Quasimodo in Agnès’ bed, she went insane from shock and grief and fled from Paris, and her neighbors turned over Quasimoto to the custody of Father Frollo (who is a priest, not a judge, in the book), which is how he ended up becoming the bellringer of Notre Dame in the first place. Disney made a huge change to the plot by making Esmeralda actually Romani because Romani people kidnapping white babies and raising them as their own is a common racist stereotype in Europe, they also completely change the circumstances of how Quasimodo came into Frollo’s custody because Romani people abandoning their babies is another racist stereotype.

Also, Esmeralda is only 14, Phoebus is a huge piece of shit groomer who is cheating on fiancée with Esmeralda (Esmeralda doesn’t know this, she believes Phoebus is really in love with her and is a kind noble man), and when he meets up to hook up with Esmeralda, he allows Frollo to hide in the corner and watch bc Frollo has a voyeur kink. However, Frollo is overcome with rage right as they’re about to have sex and he jumps out and stabs Phoebus, then he claims that Esmeralda is the one who stabbed Phoebus, because Frollo’s mindset is that if he can’t have Esmeralda, no one can, and he would rather that she die than ever have sex with anyone else besides him. Even the though Phoebus survives, and as a sole witness, he could testify to Esmeralda‘s innocence, he refuses because he doesn’t want his fiancée to find out that he cheated on her, so he knowingly allowed the innocent Esmeralda to be executed rather than have his fiancée dump him.

EDIT: creeps in the comments justifying pedophilia bc Esmeralda was 14 when she wanted to have sex with Phoebus, this was portrayed as very creepy and inappropriate in the book, it wasn’t romanticized or promoted at all, Esmeralda was very clearly a naïve innocent grooming victim and Phoebus and Frollo were portrayed as predators, stop trying to use this book to justify adult men wanting teen girls bc it is portrayed as something that is gross and wrong in the book
