Free Online Course: Linguistics 201 - The Structure of English

This course, which is among the most successful massive open online courses, is intended to familiarize students with the main structural properties of Present-Day English grammar. It starts with a review of linguistic approaches to grammar and then discusses the central grammatical aspects of PDE sentence structure: syntactic categories and syntactic functions. A unit on PDE orthography concludes the class.

Completion rate in summer 2014: 46% - must be a world record.

I don't know what the records are but the VLC-MOOC 201 - The Structure of English which has been running for 9 weeks now and will be finishing on 14 April must be high on the record index:

- 18% of all participants have now gained their statement of accomplishment
- 25% have gained their statement of participation (and many of them will definitely break the 60% accomplishment barrier)
- 68% of all participant are permanently online

And there is almost no class instructor involvement, just a few round mails and a couple of forum comments - a typical xMOOC.

MOOC Linguistics 201 with high accomplishment rates

After 6 of 13 E-Learning Units, the VLC MOOC Linguistics 201 - "The Structure of English" is setting new records. Already, 5, 2% of all participants have gained a statement of accomplishment (i.e. they have reached 60% class-mastery or more) and have thus passed the course. And there will be many more soon (the predicted accomplishment rate will be around 30%).

Here are the most important figures after 6 of 13 E-Learning Units:

- Participants: 530
- Unit Accesses: ca. 3, 000
- Worksheets (E-Tests) >= 60%: ca. 1, 100
- Forum Views: ca. 1, 300
- Current Mastery Level: 25% (i.e. 25% of all course participants have mastered the content of the respective units in focus - noone told them to do so, though. In the VLC On-Campus classes, the mastery level is 67% per class.)

So when Sebastian Thrun said about MOOCs, "we have a lousy product", we cannot subscribe to this.
