Is there any command for add/ subtract total length of lines in a drawing?

For example, measure total length of all beams on a plan excluding the columns in between.

what happen if you have to do takeoff for a project, and you got a pdf file of a drawing plan. you import the pdf as underlay, than scale the drawing. after that start to drawing lots close lines. then using the area> add > to get the total sqft. or is there a faster way to do measurements? sometime i have huge site and need to calculate hundreds of areas.
