Using 'desu/masu' doesn't necessarily imply distance between you and the other person.
It's normal to use 'desu/masu' if the other person is (much) older than you or vice versa.
So, please don't feel sad if the other person uses desu/masu with you all the time.

I feel like this is one of the most important topics when learning Japanese (in a serious way) and yet it's one of the least covered topics.

I find that it's difficult to make deep friendships with Japanese people if you don't respect the rules/manners of タメ口/ですます/敬語. They will be kind and polite with you, but there will always be a bit of 違和感 that won't allow the friendship to go deeper, so even if we do make some mistakes, it's important to at least have a good basic understanding of this. So far every material I found on this topic was super vague (understandably so, but still...) so seeing this kind of hands-on example with explanation was super useful! I hope there will be more videos on this topic in the future.

I think I just watched a video with two Japanese people trying - and failing! - to not be perfectly polite with each other. :D

That is one of the things I like about Japanese culture though. It's the complete opposite where I live, everyone is completely informal with each other, which has its own charm.

it's a source of a lot of anxiety from the non-native speakers side, particularly after becoming close friends. I think to non native speaker it feels like co-worker level politeness, not a real friend. But to native speaker maybe it feels like being messy, only people you live with are supposed to ever see you in pyjamas with bedhead. And maybe a little bit like a safe approach, so you never offend people you don't want to be close to by comparing them to people you use tamego with that aren't family. If that is the case I think it's too lonely, because you never get closer to the people you like either. Sometimes you gotta let people see your bedhead and say stuff you wouldn't say at work right??

To be honest, non-natives who are eager to engage in informal speech with natives -- and especially insist on first-name form of address, John-san instead of スミスさん, make it real hard for those of us who would like to be addressed by our last name when speaking Japanese, just like Japanese natives. IN OTHER WORDS, those whose Japanese skills are basic are convincing Japanese natives that non-natives really want to be addressed by their first names when in fact it is quite irritating.
