Fun fact: You can actually defeat Eggman in the original game, but you need to deal him more than 200 hits for that to happen. If I am not mistaken, Eggman disappears and the game softlocks.

I remember that in sonic and knuckles from sega genesis Eggman could be destroyed in the hidden palace but then out of nowhere Sonic appeared falling from space with the emerald, but I think it's a false memory

Well when i was messing around with debug mode in normal sonic 3&k i somehow glitched the cutscene when robotnik was holding the emerald and after knux got zapped nothing was happening (after 256 hits robotnik exploded and a flicky happily gone it's way out of him)
