They'll rent you an apartment for $1, 500/month, but you can't get approved for a $900/month house mortgage.

My landlord isn't doing this, but she's getting older, and had a management company take over, and they are pushing her to raise rent.

This is happening across multiple industries. The meat industry is being investigated for a similar practice in the industry where all of the major meat companies are relying on an algorithmic black box to set the price of meat.

It's not just rent. For the first time ever, I didn't pay for homeowners insurance because it more than doubled! Iwas paying $1200 to $1300 a year, then this past year I received a bill for almost $2400. I've never even used it, I've tried using it for a roof and foundation problem and was denied both times. I know its risky, but, I'm sick and tired of the ripoffs. And this was the cheapest I could find.

Yep happened here in Kerrville Texas. Zillow came into our little town and looked up all the rental owners. They then price fixed those rentals with the Landlord's and my little house I rented for 6 years, always paid on time even through COVID, went from $950.00 to $1, 170.00 per month.
On Social Security and couldn't pay that amount and was forced to rent a 3rd story room with no water or bathroom for 450.00 a month.
This is a nice Texas town that is a retirement community, many seniors became homeless because of this. Wonder if Zillow was part of the indictment. If not, they should be. Sad seniors in Texas. 👵😞 Greedy is killing the American dream.😢🇺🇲

Another textbook example of unregulated late stage capitalism. None of this would be a problem if there is a heavy enforcement of rent control. China and Vietnam have very heavy rent control; they use a centralized regulated rent average to force the rent to be at an affordable price. This way, even when landlords and corporations attempt to pull BS like RealPage, they cannot compete with cheap rent units that’s controlled by the central gov. You can’t price gouge when everyone will just rent the cheaper units next door.

You are absurdly correct. If your generation focuses on this, and on the collusion between city govern.ents and developers and contractors, you will have done working people an incalculable favor. Happening in wausau wi one of which is abc rental management llc. They monopolized the entire central Wisconsin plus. Also have sold and bought single family homes everywhere back and forth w other rental management companies. Then rental management companies also have storage, yard/snow, cleaning/contracting services ect. Completely took over and illegally evicted so many people and continue to do so. Significantly making families homeless.

I hate how people want to blame other poor people or immigrants for price increases instead of the actual problem landlords. It’s willfully ignorant.
