Lyrics
Now old Mister Johnson had some troubles of his own.
He had a yellow cat, which wouldn’t leave his home.
He tried and he tried to give the cat away.
He gave it to a man goin’ far, far away.
The cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner,
But the cat came back - it just couldn’t stay away.
Give me a meow, go “Meooow”
Now the man around the block swore he’d make it disappear,
It’ll be so easy that you’ll never need to fear.
The man set up a snare and he waited ‘round and ‘round,
But a deserted trap and an empty sack is all that they found.
But you know…
The cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner,
But the cat came back - it just couldn’t stay away.
Give me a meow. “Meooow”
He gave it to a boy with a ten dollar note,
Who packed it in a bag and sent it on a tiny boat.
Well a storm was a-coming and the chance was pretty thin,
That the boat, the sack or cat would ever be seen again.
The cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner,
But the cat came back - it just couldn’t stay away.
Give me a meow, go “Meooow”
He gave it to a man going up in a balloon,
He told him for to take it to the man in the moon.
The balloon came down about ninety miles away,
Where he is now, well I dare not say.
But you know…
The cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner,
But the cat came back - it just wouldn’t stay away.
Give me a meow, go “Meooow”
He gave it to a man who was going way out West,
He told him for to take it to the one he loved the best,
But the train never made it to the station in the end.
Now somewhere there’s a ghost train rolling round a ghastly bend!
But you know…
The cat came back the very next day,
The cat came back, we thought he was a goner,
But the cat came back - it just wouldn’t stay away.
Give me a meow, go “meooow”
Well, the cat it had a family - had some kittens of its own.
They all lived together till there came a great cyclone.
It blew across the countryside and tossed the cats around,
So you can guess that what goes up must almost certainly come down…
But the cats came back the very next day,
The cats came back - we thought they were all goners!
But the cats came back - they just couldn’t stay away!
Sing that all again now!
Yes, the cats came back the very next day,
The cats came back - we thought they were all goners!
But the cats came back - they just couldn’t stay away!
Give me a meow, go “meooow”
Louder meow!! “Meooow!!”
Louder!!! “Meooow!!!”
A little quieter… “Meoow”
Quiet meow… “meoow”
