There are a bunch of words in Japanese that sound the pretty much the same ilas English and yet I still fuck them up constantly

it's interesting seeing all the words that come from the west and the ones that already had names

I love this in Japanese, as a clue to others : personal computer = per-so- com
tape = ta--- pe - uh
mouse = mouse - uh
file = file - uh
keyboard = key - board - oh
notebook = note - oh

there are a few that are not borrowed like nori but you get the general idea. it is remembering how to say it which is difficult but identifying and understanding is easy once you see the relationship.
