What's cool about Brooker's Merocyanine is that it's solvatochromic. This means that the color it makes when it's dissolved, depends on the solvent.

Honestly I expected him to say “acetone’s always the best” only for him to show it’s insoluble in acetone

This effect is caused by ground state (lowering its energy) stabilization by polar solvents, which increases the energy gap between the ground state and excited state causing it to absorb shorter wavelength light causing a redshift in its appearance. Acetone being relatively non-polar compared to the others in this video doesn't lower the ground state energy as much, so it's not absorbing the shorter wavelengths thus we get to see them with the appearance being purple.

That purple is beautiful. Acetone is probably one of my favorite compounds. Hydrocarbons in general are tripped out and acetone it's so simple, yet useful.
