Mexico was one of the only nations to vote to condemn Italy’s invasion in the League of Nations. There is a Mexico Square in Addis Ababa to celebrate this.

As an Italian I must point out that the invasion of Ethiopia was more humiliating for Italy than for Ethiopia: Mussolini sent in half a million men with 795 tanks, 2, 000 guns, and 595 aircrafts against 800, 000 underarmed Ethiopians supported by 4 antique tanks (a gift from a more honorable Italy than the one created by Mussolini), 7 armored cars, 234 obsolete guns, and 13 planes (of which only 3 were combat capable, and obsolete), and Ethiopia still resisted effectively until Mussolini ordered to use gas and terror tactics.
That invasion only humiliated and dishonored Italy, and should have been punished faster.

My great uncle was Haile Selassie's private pilot sometime after he stopped flying B-17s in WWII - I've seen the gold watch he gave him when he stopped flying for him . Anyway, my mom did a bunch of genealogy research but this was a real eye-opener. Thank you for putting this together. I wish now I would have spoken to my uncle more bout his time as Selassie's pilot before he passed away.

Back in 1968 as a 7 year old in Melbourne, Australia, I saw, and had the top of my head patted by Haile Selassie when he visited here.
I had to ask my Mum, who was that man?
Never forgot it.

“If you are open-minded and ready to learn, there are many things which you can learn not only from books and instructions but from the very life experience itself”

"He maynot have been perfect, his improvements broadly undone by the Derg's bloody rule. But he still was a transformative leader, one whose name will echo throughout history."
Very true.

Just for anyone confused, that Marcus Garvey quote the video labels "1960" is actually "1916. Makes the timeline make a lot more sense.

Ethiopia has one of the most impressive collections of early human paleontology fossils on the entire planet. They have a huge research and teaching facility that houses some of the most important fossils in human development, including the famous skeleton of “Lucy”.

An Ethiopian here and I say Bravo 👏🏽 to you, really detailed and in-depth research was done to make this video. Only one update Mussolini was attacking Ethiopia mainly to avenge the Battle of Adwa, a battle fought in the late 19th century where Ethiopian with small ammunition, spires and swords beat an Italian army with modern ammunitions.

One of my favorite ones in a while.

I always love hearing about Ethiopia as it’s a fascinating country to me. From the origin of humans to being one of the most prominent Christian superpowers in the Red Sea to the fact that it never got officially colonized. It’s history and culture I will never get tired of hearing about.

My Father actually got to meet Haile Selassie in person. When he was a kid, Selassie was visiting his school (The Holy Trinity Church) and the kids were told not to see him when he passes by so when he visited, every kid put their backs towards him. Except for my father. He just stood there facing him and Selassie just nodded at him. Shortly afterwards, a teacher threatened to hit him once the ceremony was over but he probably forgot about it since he was never hit that day.

So interesting in Jamaica I heard about him since I was a boy, when I got older and did my research, he was to say the least a very revolutionary man way ahead of his time. Ethiopia is such an interesting country.

My grandfather was the governor of Wollo region during the emperor’s reign. He had devised a complex solution to the drought that involved transporting food from the west of the country and storing it in large underground bunkers. There was actually excess good in the western part of Ethiopia at that time but the road and transport was the issue. So he went to ask the emperor for funds and was denied. He went back the following year and again was turned down as the emperor opted to purchase arms for defence with the little budget he had. So my grandfather asked to step down. The following year the Derg used the famine as a propoganda tool to gain popular support and the emperor was removed from power. The only reason the communists didn’t kill my grandfather was because they found his diary that he had always kept and it talked all about this plan for Wollo. He was spared. Ironically the communist Derg ended up being far far worse than anything negative that the emperor ever did.

My great grandmother was a cook housekeeper at a home owned by Colonel Harding who had Haillie Selassie staying with him, she met him often, and he gave her a stick with a silver end and tip, for being so good to him, which she later gave to her son who was a Sergeant in two Scots Regiments in ww2. This was during his exile from Ethiopia in ww2
