Incredible Moiré Patterns!

preview_player
Показать описание
Sir Roger Penrose demonstrates the extraordinary moiré patterns produced by overlaying and rotating two identical, repeating patterns. As the two patterns overlapped and rotated they interfere with each other to produce tertiary patterns.

Acetates featured with kind permission of Professor Paul Steinhardt, Princeton University.

When a grid's misaligned
With another behind
That's a moiré

When the spacing is tight
and the difference is slight
That's a moiré

Does anybody know a source for those Tiling - Printouts? A template in pdf or svg-form? Would be nice to print that out on transparent film.

What's there to live for now that I've seen something this incredible?

I've been fascinated to find myself able to see moiré patterns in meshes like fences, with seemingly no overlapping patterns, using my bare eyes and no camera. I have yet not gotten an explanation for this effect. With digital cameras, moiré occurs because the matrix of photodiodes on the sensor effectively interferes with a similarly sized pattern on the projection of the image. But our eyes do not have a sensor matrix in the same way, meaning the effect must be caused by self-interfering patterns caused by imperfections in the mesh, such a embossed rhombic grids.

I love hearing people talk when they're distracted... How many sentences did he finish in this video?

We take the incredible moire patterns and push it somewhere else!

If you don’t know who he is, google “Roger Penrose.” He is a genius in our time.

You almost discovered geometric cognition 10 years before me, incredible!

I wanna know whether there will be moire patterns when it comes to nanoscale. And when do we have to consider diffraction.

Does somebody know where and in what occasion the video was shot?

It is so cool that I have to do it by my hands now!

Guess I'm gonna have to get some acetate projector sheets and have a play around with this.

That shape looks a lot like the mandelbrot set fractal, but more regular.

aren't they semi-repeating patterns that's what makes them so interesting?
