The rudis was a wooden sword awarded to gladiators upon retirement. The Romans, always a warlike lot, had another use for wooden swords...

"Their drills were bloodless battles, and their battles were bloody drills."

So the Roman army was Pinky and the Brain playing basketball? “If we practice basketball wearing wooden clogs, imagine how good we’ll be when we’re wearing sneakers.”

“Ouch… ouch! Would you stop that, please! Hey, that’s kind of pointy… cut that out right now!”

Ironic.
The most valuable trophy of an exceptionally dangerous gladiator is something museums sell in giftshops for children to harmlessly annoy their parents with.

Same reason baseball players use those weight rings on their bats and do a bunch of practice swings when theyre on deck.

Kinda like how Goku wears weighted clothing when he's practicing martial arts. I bet the Romans got the idea from Dragonball.

I made one for my sister. She wanted a Rudis and I had a walnut plank.

From what I have been told gladiators were very expensive humans so they were not killed as often as people think

I love the subtle thing it represents - a badass fighter

Man, imagine telling a lady "yeah sometimes I like to play with my wooden sword. It makes me feel like Superman!"

When visiting Housestead Fort, many years ago, they had a Spanish made Copy of an actual Roman sword.

I am saddened by the sheer number of people who don't understand that despite the fact that steel is significantly more _dense_ than wood, because a sword is comprised of ao much less *volume* than the wooden sword, the wooden sword's weight could easily exceed that of the real thing.

I would point out that the doubled weight of the trainning equipment some roman soliders used might not be all that correct
While we do know some did that, it is written somewhere (i think at least....)

But some historians aren't sure was that as common. Because of the doubled weight soliders would maybe strike to hard, go out of balance. It would be harder to control because they are use to the weight, and its now gone all of a sudden.

If Im wrong, correct me :)

Do more videos on the topics of ancient Rome and Greece please. I would also settle for ancient China or other cultures, thank you Lloyd!

Cursed sword of splintering wood: 20 weight, 2 attack, causes 1HP damage on swing

This concept got me through 1. Two music college auditions and 2. My driving test. Giving yourself a deliberate handicap in training and then releasing it during "the big thing" definitely does give you an advantage.

This wood was most likely Cornelian Cherry which was also used by the greeks for spears and arrows and in greek the name of the tree was the same as “spear”. Its one of the strongest woods in Europe and it sinks in water. Its also extremely shock resistant which made it good for wood cuts and wood engravings in printing machines during the late 1800s in Europe and England primarily.
