June is always set aside to pick blueberries on the King Blueberry Farm. Danny and Wanda have picked blueberries for the past 3 summers. They pick 12 to 25 gallons a day depending on the orders.

Yummm! Those must be SOOO delicious because they are straight from the tree. How WONDERFUL it is to grow your own food. Blessings!

Have you tried tying the bucket around your waist? My family used to pick blueberries when i was little during the summer that was our job and we would tie white gallon buckets around our waist and pick. Tie a knot on the end and wrap it around you waist and tie a bow of some sort on the other side so u just pull the string and it comes off easily but holds up when its full of berries.

I dunno if Wanda sews, but an apron type deal with a big pocket at the bottom apron part works well for gathering, just a thought. I have blackberries, need to get some blueberries planted

Looking good Danny and Wanda! We're picking like crazy now too, although the drought has been a challenge. We're in north central Alabama and it has been crazy dry. I noticed the guys at Hoss Tools commented. They make an excellent "over the shoulder harvesting basket" that i use. Not great if you have to bend way over buy as tall as your bushes (trees) are it would be ideal. I mainly use it for larger fruits like tomatoes, apples etc but it works great for berries too. Frees up both hands and is comfortable to wear due to the strap system. I feel sure you've seen them. $25 bucks well spent for

I planted about 5 different varieties and the Tiff is the one that has done the best for me so far. Although they are no where near  as tall as yours yet.

You can take a cloth shopping bag with a removable bottom ( they are like plastic and help hold shape of the bag). Fold the top half to the inside to give more support to the sides and keep it from being too deep and make it awkward to drop berries into. Fit a wide cloth strap to 2 sides and carry against your chest or belly. The cloth sides fit comfortably against your body, and even folded down, you can get a lot in there without a lot of bending. I hope I have helped you picture something that will help. You usually have the best ideas! Blueberries around here won't be ready for almost another month.

Hi Danny and Wanda :) If you wear a belt, you can hook a gallon milk jug to your belt and cut the front out to load it . Not my idea but I saw it on someones channel. Worked really well.

Reminded me of the hours we used to pick wild black and red raspberries
with Mom growing up.

She had small pails that hung at our waists with a belt. We could pick with both
hands, and not over fill or smash the berries. We had flat pans we would
empty into, so the berries would stay in a single layer.

Brought back wonderful memories spent with Mom.

Also the sweat and mosquito bites! But, what a bountiful harvest.

I discovered a method this year that made it allot easier on the back from bending up/down so much. You might give it a try. I used a large strainer with a handle. Hold it under the berry with one hand and give a twist w/the other and let'em fall. It holds much more than your hand can and really saved my back :)
My young bushes didn't have many this year plus had to grab before the deer & birds found them, my daughter and I are going next week to a local pick your own farm.

Hey Wanda just to let you know I haven't forgotten your recipe book $. I will send thru paypal 1st of the month.

I have an idea for a picking device. What about those flat sided buckets that are designed to hang on a fence. my 4-H kids use them 4 water buckets at the fair. maybe you could strap those to your waist then empty them into Flats. that is such a beautiful area I could forget I was working.

That's a heap of blueberries! Been picking ours the last few days as well. We have a couple of the bushier type plants that are lower to the ground. Not sure of the variety.
