Thank you for this explanation, it instantly made sense. The Wikipedia page for the theorem has some proof that uses oiler's theorem, but I didn't understand how it prooved anything.

Does anyone know why (cos x + isinx)^2 = (cos2x + isin2x)? Why does cosx x cosx = cos2x instead of cos^x?
