Показать описание
The 6th Féile na bhFlaitheartach, which celebrated the writings and work of Liam and Tom O'Flaherty and also Máirtín Ó Direáin, took place on Inishmore, Aran Islands, on August 25th and 26th.
The keynote lecture entitled ‘"The ranks of respectability": Prostitution, Social Reform and the Free State’ was delivered by Laura Lovejoy, who is an Irish Research Council postdoctoral fellow in the School of English at University College Cork.
Síobhra Aiken, Centre for Irish Studies at NUI Galway, who curated the exhibition Máirtín Ó Direáin: Fathach File / Reluctant Modernist in Galway earlier this year, delivered a paper which sought to enlighten our understanding of Ó Direáin’s work and to encourage further interest in his life and his poetry.
The Féile included a reading by Fionnghuala Ní Choncheanainn of a Tom O’Flaherty short story which took place at the O'Flaherty Garden of Remembrance at Gort na gCapall and a walk from the O'Flaherty homestead to Scoil Fhearann an Choirce, the school which the O'Flahertys attended - by the backroads used by them.
An Merican Wake: an adaptation of Going into Exile by Liam O Flaherty translated by Máirín Mhic Lochlainn was performed by Aisteoirí Chois Fharraige and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Inis Móir in Halla Rónáin.
