Does it live up to the hype? - Shmee150’s Toyota Supra GR 2019 Full Review

The new Toyota Supra GR (Gazoo Racing) is one of the most hyped cars of the last decade, teased as a concept for many years and eventually released to huge acclaim. It looks great and sounds good, but does it really live up to the hype?

Tim Oldland was lucky enough to borrow Shmee150’s Supra Launch Edition (thanks again Shmee!) and has put it through its paces to find out.

And, he doesn’t mention BMW once!!! 😜

I can tell you that I didn't realize how much I'd love driving this car, until I bought mine last week! It's an amazing car!

Great review Tim, keep it up. Congrats on not mentioning the elephant in the room although I can't imagine why people have a problem with BMWs involvement, I can't think of any situation where you would pick a Toyota over a BMW. I'm a bit shocked by the roofline thing, I know you are 6'3" but that looked so low that even under 6ft it would be a hazard.

Good review 👍
As an M2 owner, and I’ve owned two GT86’s I should be mega keen on one of I heard nothing from Toyota dealer and when I saw it at Goodwood I just couldn’t love it enough .... it’s so frustrating as I really want to!

You can't tune Alpine A110 to thousands of horsepower, but you can with the Supra. That's the point, Supra is a car for tuners

If you look at Jackie Ding’s video about fake vents...it’s useless even if you decide to open it

No alpine in the US otherwise it'd be a nice option albeit its significantly more expensive to the Supra. The Porsche as said is a 4 cylinder and that's a no go, the Alpine is a 4 banger too, but way lighter so it works well. The 2021 Supra is getting a 4 pot though thats 200ish pounds lighter so that one could be tossed around a little more. Audi TT RS is also way more expensive over the Supra. As an american buyer it really comes down to the Supra or Cayman, but when you can get a fully loaded Supra for $54k, a base cayman starts at $57k with options you definitely want that will creep that price into the 60s. For value the supra is hard to beat and should be the most reliable and cheapest to maintain if Toyota did their due diligence as they say they did when testing all the BMW parts to meet their own standards.

No. 1. Have have to agree with you about what 2 seater I'd chose if I was in the market for one, although I haven't driven it. The Alpine A110 I would purchase too. No. 2. I honestly had considered trading my 997 in against a Supra, providing the Supra looked similar to the concept car. I was horrified by the difference. To me, it's like a very ugly sister. No 3. The thing I like about this car as opposed to it's rivals is the simplicity in ordering it, i.e. spec your paint and your done, buy a German car and you've got to spend thousands on it in optional extras you get as standard here. (Hence why I'd chose an Alpine over a Cayman T for example) No 4. As for the owner of the car you had, he started out as a very likeable chap, showing super cars, talking to the companies, especially Christian Von Koenigsegg, and then turned into the most annoying, self centred gobshite on YouTube. Look at me and my new this, look at me and my new that. Hence why I detest anything BOTB does with any of these YouTube 'stars'. No. 5, Great review Tim, I'd much rather see this content than the other type of stuff. Well done.
