It is highly unlikely that there are still orphans left in the factory. I think they're already dead by the time the player showed up in chapter 1.

I believe The Prototype originally was trying to free Theodore, not itself.

When it saw what became of Theodore however, it realised that the staff would have to be taken out.

It knew what would happen to the toys when the staff died, but saw them as a means to an end.

It manipulated ALL the toys it could and had any who realised the truth killed. Except for the ones it needed to set the scene...

Now The Prototype couldn’t free the children after The Hour of Joy incase they led anyone back to the factory and were immediately slaughtered by the rogue toys.

The Prototype had one option left: Bide it's time and let the toys kill off each other and then send out a distress call to ensure the rescue of the orphans: The Player.

A worker unaware of the horror and would walk right into it.
The goal: To be guided by Poppy into accessing and freeing the orphans.

I fully believe Poppy knew what was coming and supported it, but had to act like an adversary in order to ensure The Player could have protection from HER followers that she'd misled and gain the players trust.

If The Player SAW The Prototype, they'd probably flee in terror.
A tiny, friendly doll however is easy to sympathise with and so she acts in place of The Prototype.

I believe Poppy has been pretending to be asleep in the case for over a decade to maintain her facade.
There's no reason to believe that ALL toys are affected by the gas.
We can assume it, but it has never been shown to The Player.

I believe The Player was an orphan recruited by Playtime Co.

What a twisted way for Playtime Co to ensure free labour and no lawsuits, while having grown orphans experiment on new orphans.

So we may actually be an evil character with a sympathetic backstory.

I think some of the orphans are alive and are guarded by the most secret experiments that even the other toys fear. It makes sense as there's over a thousand unknown experiments before the ones we meet. That and there's tons of small toys littered around the factory, which became easy food as the prototype rationed the human bodies of the workers. Perhaps the prototype even started to experiment on their bodies to make guards that even Poppy didn't know about.

My honest opinion? The children are all dead. The biggest clue as to what happened to them lies in craftycorn's cut out voice lines:

Replace red with food.

It wouldn't make sense that the bigger body toys to turn on their fellow experiment smaller toys before the children.

I think the other toys found out about the location for the children and feasted on them. I won't be surprised if these toys were later punished, but what's done is done. The children are all gone.

I don’t think the prototype has commited a atrocity against the kids due to A the toys being the children and if he got them to revolt to free them killing the remaining would of not made sense. Catnap follows the prototype’s every command and he was originally a child so he probably didn’t go insane against them.
What I believe happened is they simply starved, a WW2 bunker isn’t made to be stocked up on food it’s ment to get through a bombing night. Mostly likely they eventually died and when they did the prototype used there bodies for something or the toys used then as food.

I think the smiling critters must have took care of them. The main two suspects is crafty corn and piggy piggy.
Cuz mainly before the hour of joy dog they had told some of the smiling critters to grab a group of children
And put them all in somewhere safe. He'll kill him
When crafty corn want it 2 paint she ran out of red and probably to children out of the group for her red
And the next one piggy piggy. When piggy piggy saw all the food after years gone by she's probably hungry
And could not wait anymore so she probably went mad and ate some of the children out of the group
Cuz we all know piggy piggy likes to eat and crafty corn likes to paint.
So they could have worked together.

I think what happened to the orphans since we're using the smiling critters VHS so my theory is that cat nap overdosed them with the red smoke and because of that they must have died
