What is Planetary Defense?

Giant craters pepper the Moon and are visible hundreds of thousands of miles away by human eyes on Earth. Where did those craters come from? What are asteroids and planetary defense? Are we in danger of being hit by a giant space rock? What can we even do about an asteroid that is set to impact Earth?

Unistellar Education Associate, Dan Peluso, tells us about Planetary Defense in this video made in partnership between the SETI Institute, Chabot Space & Science Center and Unistellar.

This is super informative. It is so rare to find this level of energy, charisma, and scientific fact all in one place. Very grateful to SETI's work and their efforts to harness the power of enthusiastic young scientists to promote citizen science and foster civic scientific responsibility. We should all lobby our government to fund these initiatives better.

I love that planetary scale defenders could be just people with a telescope working with scientists.

Good and succinct video. Wasn't the location of the Chicxulub impact in part why it was so devastating ?

Quite informative! It's empowering to think that anyone with a telescope in their backyard can contribute to making the world a little bit safer
