Pascal Rogé — “Gymnopédie No. 1”, Erik Satie
The eminent French pianist and Steinway Artist Pascal Rogé performs Erik Satie’s timeless work of tranquility, “Gymnopédie No. 1,” at New York City’s Steinway Hall. Satie’s most celebrated gem, which is the soundtrack to all your favorite indie films, is deceptively simple in that the melody — unbeknownst to the listener — begins on the second beat (in 3/4 time). Rogé’s gentle use of rubato adds to the aura of uncertainty.

Finally an interpretation where the piano keys are not hammered. Its subtle sensual and nice

Moest of Satie’s compositions basically show that music doesn’t need to be complicated to be beautiful!

very refreshing. sometimes when people play this they sound like they’re asleep playing it. he is wandering through the song and exploring it

Beautiful. And as a beginner, it's liberating to see a master intentionally altering sheet music -- changing tempo, leaving out notes, playing LH parts with RH, and I'm sure others I've not even realized. Inspirational.

So many music critics here. I just listened to this performance and then three others (I won't name names). I like this interpretation the best.

He's an artist not a robot, he doesn't need a metronome. It's called rubato and he's using it to be more expressive.
Faster than I'm used to hearing it, but I like his interpretation here.

Sorry I’m soo late. This rendition makes sense! Others I’ve heard, I liked the beginning and then it gets lost, and due to my ability to hear harmonies and pitches, it can be like nails skreeechhing down a chalkboard! The tempos are a perfect variety. It reminds me of watching Clouds float, drift and change their shapes…within seconds it’s different. The same with Sunsets painted across the Sky. So Beautiful & Eloquently played with so much expression. Thank you so much for teaching me. I love the simplicity of this piece🌹🤍🦢

Beautiful interpretation. Makes me want to get a piano again. I play by ear so it would take a while to learn but what a piece to add to repertoire!

Probably on the greatest recorded interpreter of Satie. The flow is push-ups for the soul.
