I really loved how supportive Mei's friends were after learning her secret. They love and care for her unconditionally, accepting her just as she is. ♥️

I liked that this film was set in Canada, since we got to see plenty of Candian landmarks, such as Tim Hortons, or the CNN Tower. There's also legendary Candian Sandra Oh as Ming! 🇨🇦

Was really impressed by this movie, the maturity, the nostalgia, the themes throughout the movie. This movie actually made me teary eye in the final 3rd (no spoilers) but very happy with this movie.

When Mei was jumping when the red moon was behind, it looked like a reference to the Girl Who Leapt Through Time. And some of the elements of were movie were anime like especially the sparkly eyes!!!

While easter eggs and references are things that i wasn't really looking for in the movie, i found the story to be quite interesting!

My youngest son is named Devin and we all laughed when the scene involved the girls eyecanding Devon. Now Devin loves doing a foot stomp and yelling awhoo.

Another one: At the start of the film, Mei shouts "Besties, assemble!", which Marvel fans will recognize as a nod to the iconic catchphrase "Avengers, assemble!". And considering this and the lead actors for Onward and Lightyear, someone at Pixar is obviously a Marvel fan.

Fun fact, along Chinatown in Toronto, at one of the streetcar stops, there is a restaurant named bao... that was a truly double reference to Spadina Ave (chinatown) and to the short film

When Mei and her best friends are sitting on the roof looking at the pool, you can see the Pixar ball floating inside the pool.

Pretty sure Mei's mom causing the grandma's scar was as explicit as subtlety can get. She touches the scar when talking about Mei's mom's panda, and iirc Mei's mom mentions hurting her mother when she transformed.

I grew up in Beijing and I really love how they get a lot of Chinese details right:

4 is an unlucky number, because it is pronounced similar to "si", which means death. Some buildings don’t have the floor number 4 and some (especially hospitals) don’t have 14th floor, because it can be pronounced "yao si": about to die

When Jin, Mei's father, picks up the telephone he says 喂 (wei)?, the Chinese greeting when picking up the phone

The meals are Chinese styled: porridge for breakfast, dad’s cooking with the frying pan, making Bao Zi or “dumplings” together as a family while watching TV, the circular spinning family dining table, the food, and the chopsticks in the family dinner scene before the ritual

The signs and art style in front of Mei's desk that says Work, Study, Listen. For me it is very reminiscent of the style of stationary everyone in elementary and middle school used in Beijing

Mei's family shortens Meilin to Mei Mei, a common childhood nickname that family members call Chinese kids

The temple: although everything in the Lee family temple is remade into red pandas, everything from the architecture to stone lions to the fish pond is very Chinese styled

The TV show Mei and Ming watched when making Bao Zi: Chinese people love costume dramas set in ancient dramas

The father’s accent

The Chinese paintings, the characters, even the stamps and calligraphy in the temple

The traditional instruments in the music

2002: A year after September 11, Pokemon ruby & Sapphire, Treasure Planet, Lilo & Stitch, Halo, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Gamecube, Playstation 2, Tamagotchi, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, these are some things that come to mind when I think of this year.

I spotted the Pizza Planet Truck parked on the street during Mei's run to the SkyDome after she abandoned her ritual ceremony!

I dunno but I think the size of Mei's mother's Panda symbolizes the pressures she got from Mei's grandmother. The more pressure and secrets kept inside makes a large bomb that when explodes is very destructive. That's how I view it, how about you guys?

This is such a good movie. I loved the early 2000s references with their attire such as butterfly clips in the hair and plastic choker necklaces. This movie is at once nostalgic and refreshing. It covers a new topic for Disney in a familiar and fun way.

I just heard from behind the scenes of Turning Red that the movie takes place in the Toy Story universe. Interesting 🤔 ❤️👍
