churches in islands that are remote are done to get protection from pirates.and some piece of info, the name santorini was stuck from venetians due to a small church of saint irina(eirini) which was by the sea. so santa irina through the ages became santorini.the actual name of the island is thira

you should go over to the remote volcano island next to santorini. its known for its red healing waters

Greeks are very much into their religion. It was quite typical, back in the day, for each house in a village, to have its own church. A lot of the houses are no longer around, but upkeep of churches in Greece was always a priority. This is why you find many of these small churches scattered around in isolated areas.
