Chevrotain | The Mouse Deer
This miniature deer is the smallest hoofed mammal on earth.
This is the Chevrotain.
Scientifically known as Tragulidae,
and often referred to as the "mouse deer"
this creature combines delicate features and a slender frame.
The Asian species weigh between 0.7 and 8.0 kilograms
while the African chevrotain is considerably larger, at 7 to16 kilograms.
Despite resembling deer, chevrotains are not true deer.
These shy creatures live in solitary or in pairs.
They are known for their unique adaptations,
including the V-shaped tuft of hair on their heads
and their ability to stand on their hind legs to reach higher leaves.
Certain species display a notable attraction to water,
frequently staying underwater for extended durations
to avoid predators or unwelcome disturbances.
This observation has also provided credibility
to the hypothesis that whales evolved
from aquatic animals resembling small deer.
