In gen 1 HLNA says that the reason their are Dinos is because they were used as a test for normal animals but the combo between Dinos and humans worked so well that they kept it

basically because if there was only our modern animals, humans would have conquered the whole place already
they wanted it to be balanced for all species, not just the humans

This also explains why there are creatures that aren’t real or dino’s that work different; they are based off of the creators’ ideas of them. So if they believed dilos had poisonous spit, they coded it into the creature.

Also, I'm not sure what they mean by backing up dinosaurs, since most of the dinosaurs look nothing like their extinct forms. Helena never DNA tested the dinosaurs either, so they could just not be part of the same genus as the originals, or are literally not the same genus, such as troodon not even existing anymore, dire wolves being part of Canis and looking like wolves instead of being in Aenocyon and looking like jackals, or megalodon being in Carcharodon instead of Octodus. Those aren't animals saved from Earth, they're entirely new ones.

The dinosaurs might not even be dinosaurs aswell, they could just be things engineered to look like them or at least what humans want them to be. Either that or it's like Jurassic park and they Genetically altered them to be different

I recall hints from the survivor notes that most of the creatures in the Ark genetic database are genetically engineered to equip humanity with survival pets, & a means to fight against the monsters mutated by element on Earth. This is basically confirmed with conjectures l8r about larger than normal Dinos seeming made to be ridden, & creatures that have been created from scratch to fill a specific roll. Like say the Maewing, or Wyverns.
