Almost every human follows the same biomechanical pattern of walking -- what we call gait. And since it's so often the cause (or consequence of pain), movement experts spend a lot of time studying the normal gait cycle.

Hi, I’m Patrick. I’m a freelance science writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and a master’s in clinical exercise physiology. I used to work in the clinical setting as a certified athletic trainer, physical therapy aide, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. After working in the clinical setting, I went back to school and became a teacher. The goal of my content is to help normal people, not just pre-med students, learn about the human body. That might mean explaining a topic from an anatomy class or exploring a topic from medical history.

My stroke is 3 years old. I refuse to give up. A shuttle machine corrected it temporarily and Iv made it my mission to walk like pre stroke. I’m 37

I'm gonna be totally honest, my Trendelenberg Gait brought a non-zero number of boys to the yard.

i have a lot of skeletal abnormalities, and have an abnormal gait. learning about this is super fascinating, and helps me understand what my physiotherapists are looking for in me! also explains all the testing orthopedists did when i was a kid, heh

This proves to me that the Patterson/Gimlin Bigfoot is real ( I know it might be a little off-topic here ). If you watch the figure in the 1967 Patteronson film, you'll notice that its walking pattern is way way off compared to a human; the shin rises to almost 90 degrees, the front knee doesn't lock, it has a zero gait ( like walking a tightrope ), and the arm swing is way off as well. It's something that critics don't take into consideration.

Fascinating subject and a great video. Thanks Pat and Maren.
Of course, now I need to try not to look creepy while staring at people walking through the office! 🙄🏃🏽‍♂️

I thought there was confusion about walking steps. Can you please verify. Is it true that you’re supposed to walk heel to toe vs “ front-mid to heel”. Ive seen where its really unhealthy to plant heel first due to the shock put on the heel that radiates up the entire back extremity. Can you tell me why I am conflicted?
Im asking bc I keep having so much pain in Buttocks, calves and lateral chin muscles. Please advise my terminology. Neither science or medical here. Im hair stylist/mom.

I’ve been trying to find someone who explains the knees and correct positions/ flexion/ extension when walking and through the different points. My gait is off because I ruptured my ACL 1.5 years ago and I never had surgery or heavy PT (not affordable at all 😢) so I’ve done my best in just body weight exercises and practicing my gait. What I don’t know is if my knee is supposed to be straight and at full extension at any point in my step. Because if I were to allow my right knee to fully extend, I very well could injure my knee and hyper extend it since I have no stability lol

Do you know anything about Trendelenburg Gait and how to start walking normal ?
I have this penguin walk for a while and I have exercise doing all kind of things.
My right Hip is weak side, and my left side must drop, it's out of lined. *I scuff my LEFT SHOE ( foot )* .
I have noticed that, my right shoe, it's okay .
If you can only give me ideas how to change my gait, the help will be much appreciated. Thank you .
